Birth hypoxia occurs when the brain is deprived of oxygen. Hypoxia happens during pregnancy or delivery and often results in brain damage. It often contributes to cerebral palsy and other disabilities, and can lead to infant death.
Many parents do not realize the extent of their child’s brain damage until developmental delays become apparent. Children who have suffered hypoxia experience severe mental and emotional problems which require accommodations.
Hypoxia is often preventable. Lack of oxygen at birth can be avoided when proper medical care is provided. When hypoxia occurs, the medical negligence of a doctor is often to blame. Some of the possibly medical causes of birth hypoxia are doctors failing to properly monitor the fetus, failing to identify or prevent bacterial infections, entanglement in the umbilical cord, placental abruption, allowing a delivery to go too long, or failure to recognize fetal distress.
