Cerebral Palsy Injury Lawyer

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a type of brain damage that can result in severe and incurable mental and physical impairment. Cerebral palsy is often caused medical error such as asphyxia before birth, hypoxia of the brain, birth trauma during labor and delivery, and complications in the perinatal period.

Mistakes by health care personnel before, during or immediately after childbirth results in hundreds if not thousands of cases of cerebral palsy every year. These baby victims suffer permanent injury and often require lifetime medical care.

Characteristics of Cerebral Palsy

All types of cerebral palsy are characterized by abnormal muscle tone, reflexes, motor development, and coordination. The classic symptoms are spasms or other involuntary movements, unsteady gait, balance problems, and/or decreased muscle mass. The effects of cerebral palsy range from mild clumsiness to severe impairments allowing no movement at all.

Babies born with severe cerebral palsy often have an irregular posture; their bodies can either be extremely floppy or incredibly stiff. Birth defects, such as spinal curvature, a small jawbone, or a small head sometimes occur along with CP. A delay in sitting, rolling, crawling or waking can be a sign that your baby may have cerebral palsy or another birth injury or birth defect.

Some babies born with CP do not show signs immediately after birth, but by 6/12 to 9/12 months the symptoms can be seen. In the United States, at least 10,000 infants are born with CP each year, and 1200–1500 are diagnosed at preschool age when symptoms become more obvious.
