Tegretol Birth Defects

If You Took Tegretol or Another Anti-Seizure Medication During Pregnancy and Your Baby Was Born With Birth Defects, You Need to Speak With a Lawyer Now.

Tegretol in Pregnancy Can Cause Birth Defects Such As:

  • Ventricular Septal Defects and Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) – “hole in the heart”
  • Pulmonary Valve Stenosis – pulmonary valve does not open wide enough, lessening blood flows to the lungs
  • Spina Bifida – “split spine” or any spinal birth defects
  • Hydrocephalus – “water on the brain”
  • Gastroschisis – intestines stick out of the baby’s body
  • Cleft Palate – oral birth defect on one or both sides of roof of mouth
  • Cleft Lip with Cleft Palate – facial birth defects on upper lip and roof of mouth

Anti-Seizure Medications such as Topamax, Depakote and Tegretol are widely prescribed to prevent convulsions.  These medications have also been linked to an increased risk of birth defects when women take them while pregnant.

Tegretol, manufactured by Novartis, has been prescribed for over 30 years to combat epileptic seizures and as an anti-convulsant.  It has also been approved to treat bipolar disorder and other medical conditions.  Recent studies have shown epilepsy medications such as Depakote and Tegretol are associated with congenital birth defects such as heart defects and spina bifida.
